You are asked to join a nonprofit board. Do you say yes? But what are they really asking you to do? Learn the questions to ask before you say “I do.”
Successful fundraising requires an organization-wide culture of fundraising. It can’t be the responsibility of one person. Building a culture of fundraising will engage board, staff and volunteers in giving and asking. Fundraising is an honor and a privilege.
With 2012 will come opportunities to engage with political candidates. Know how to engage, what to expect. Column focuses on questions for leadership to raise before engaging. Remember: elected officials are representatives, when they support your organization they are doing so as your representative, not as an individual.
Make preparing for fundraising success a priority for the new year. While certain factors will impact the number and size of gifts your organization or institution may receive, there is plenty your leadership can do to attract and retain funding. We will discuss these in coming columns and through the year.
Taking a risk and funding smaller, grass roots organizations may feel challenging when there are larger, more established organizations providing similar services. Yet even when providing award winning services, not all organizations or institutions can serve everyone within a service area.
Which is more important efficiency or innovation? Consolidation or diversity? Are the values and metrics of the private sector the same as those of the non-profit sector? Should funding flow to institutions and organizations who demonstrate the greatest impact and serve the greatest numbers?
